Reconstructed will from a 1753 deed speaks of eldest son Solomon and younger son John. Wexford. "Also lands in Co Wexford held from Nicholas Loftus - Grange, then in the possession of William Johnson." There is a possible Ferns will dated 1742, but that refers to a Richards of Coolstuffe. High Sherriff of Wexford in 1728: source: Burke: Landed Gentry 1912 including year of death. MI (from vol 7 of Memorials of the Dead by Brian Cantwell) Here lies the body of John Richards of Raheen in the Co of Wexford who died 11 (? Oct) 1749 in the 60th year of his age, to whose memory this stone was erected by his son, Solomon Richards. Also the body of Mrs Kathleen Richards, wife of the said John Richards who died the 18th November 1758 in the 59th year of her age. He can't have died in Oct if the Admon was granted in August. His mother's father John Jacob was buried in the same graveyard. Betham's sketch pedigree says he was the only son. Administration was granted 25 Aug 1749 to Solomon R son and Catherine R - the wid. (Betham Prerogative Admons R-W 1595-1799 MF 322 at the SOG library] In 1714 and 1718 he was living in Newtowne, Co Wexford. He bought the mortgaged lands that were granted to his grandfather, Col Solomon Richards, from his aunt Elizabeth Richards in 1714 and his first cousin Dorothy Richards (and her husband Samuel Foley) in 1718. It is not clear when he paid of the mortgages. In 1712 the mortgage on some of the properties was assigned to Henry Singleton by Richard Saunders. He bought the remaining two thirds of Raheen from Henry Butler in 1731. He seems to have done a lot of land deals and built up the family fortunes.
Arthur Vicars' index to prerogative wills of Ireland 1536-1810 lists her will "Catherine Raheen, Wexford, Widow 1758" and probate was granted to her son Solomon. William Burtenwood was Rector of Kilgarvan from 1685-1690 and Prebendary of Taghmon from 1691-1714. There is also a William Burtonwood s. of Thomas, of Warrington, co. Lancs who matriculated at St Edmond Hall, Oxford 10 April 1674, aged 17. (See Alumni Oxonienses 1500-1714, Foster 1891 page 219]. He is noted as p.p = pauper puer). Betham does not give a Christian Name for Catharine's father. A note in Edward Moore Richards' Journal says she was the daughter of the Revd William Burtenwood. The note also says that he died intestate and admon was granted to John Richards husband of daughter & next of kin. Date of death and age from MI - see her husband, John Richards Betham's will extracts(Prerogative Wills P-W 1551-1799] MF315 at SOG library says Catherine of Raheen Co Wexford widow .... sons John Goddard abd Edward daur Elizabeth wife of William Stephens of Grange. Proved by eldest son Solomon - husband John Richards deceased.
