He was Scientific Officer, Ministry of Aircraft Production in 1941. He was mentioned in the will of his wife Doris Mona Whiteside Hirst (7), then Fairthorne, dated 10 July 1961. He took a sabbatical year at Western Reserve University and then took early retirement from RAE with the rank of Senior Principal Scientific Officer. He then went to work in Washington DC, Ohio and was visiting professor in Information Science at Albany. He was mentioned in the will of his sister Margaret Vere Fairthorne (25) dated 28 September 1962. He witnessed the marriage of Sarah Belinda Leslie (4) and Simon Fairthorne (1) on 30 March 1964 at All Saints, Hereford, Herefordshire. With Brian Salt he made animated mathematical films in the 1930s - his interests include photography, science fiction and cinema (he was one of the earliest members of the British Film Institute).
