Note on Husband: Bernard John WARD - shared note

Vicar of Peterchurch, Herefordshire. Information from MI in Stanton church, Glos and family records. Deacon: 5 August 1821 Hereford Curate: Stretham Grandsome of Grensham 5 Aug 1821 Priest: 4 Aug 1822 Hereford Vicar of Peterchurch Instituted 30 December 1829 MI in Stanton Church, Glos reads: In a vault in this churchyard rests in hope of resurrection unto eternal life the body of The Reverend Bernard John Ward, vicar of Peterchurch in the county of Hereford. Third surviving son of the late Robert Ward of Bangor Castle in the county of Down. Son of the first Viscount Bangor. He married 31 August 1824 Isabella Frances, youngest daughter of the late Robert Phillipps Esq of Longworth in the County of Hereford. and died January 24th 1832 aged 33 leaving three sons and one daughter. His widow affectionately inscribes this memorial. Alumni Oxonienses (Foster 1891) records Matriculated at Trinity College 20 May 1816 aged 18. BA 1820, MA 1822. Vicar of Peterchurch from 1829 until death. Letter dated 22 July 1824 from his half brother Edward Michael Ward to Mary Anne Symes, the sister of his step mother Louisa Jane Symes: Dear Mary Anne John and I are both of the opinion that Bernard is about to do a thing which he will repent of - viz: marrying with nothing in hand and only 460 £ a year to live on - we have been trying to persuade him of this. I suggested to him to propose to my father & Mrs P(hillipps) to make the provision ageed on to commence immediately, & to postpone the marriage for a year by which plan (as they can live as two cheaper than when united) they would have the difference between the expenses of these two states to the fore at the year's end, and be without the incumbrance (or incumbrances?) which if they dash into business at present will in all probability be their bitter happiness by next June. I think as he has no mother to advise him you might step forward & put yourself in communication with Mrs Phillips, Worthing, Sussex or get my father to do it - because perhaps even were Bd willing to do so, it would be more proper that demurs however prudentially gounded should not come from himself. He ought to have taken council from prudent Bailey - with who by the way we all three dined yesterday in Harley st & had Champagne & Claret. The eatable part would have been better had he had a famale but all looked as if about to be not only snug but something more, which under the superintendance of a charming your woman may well amount to elegance - John's visit has been great comfort to me - I have determined against any change of residence for M but have made such alterations as have pleased Lord M & satisfied myself that I have done for the best. I expect daily to hear of the arrival of the Herald in the River and in three or four days from hence I expect to Embark - however write to the FO as usual. ever yours truly E M Ward. Blake's Hotel, Jermyn Street, 22 July 1824
