Educated at Connaught House Prep School ( then based in Weymouth) , then Sherborne School ( Lyon House), Dorset 1942- 1946. source: Malcolm Richards 2000 Career Notes Joined the Somerset Light Infantry on his 18th Birthday in June 1946. Selected for Officer Cadet training; Whilst at the OCTU at Mons Barracks, a number of the cadets were told that there was a shortage of vacancies in the Infantry and were asked if they would join the Royal Artillery. Robin did so and went for further training at Cove where he and others were eventually told that there would be no officers vacancies for them unless they took Short Service Commissions. As he had already been given a vacancy at Sidney Sussex College, Cambridge, for September 1948, Robin declined and returned to the Somerset Light Infantry Depot where he was again selected for Officer training but declined to take it up in view of his previous experience and the fact that he was going up to Cambridge within a year. He was drafted to the Middle East and eventually joined the DCLI ( Duke of Cornwall Light Infantry) ? 1st Battalion with whom he served for about 9 months in Cyprus ( Dukeilia Camp). He was demobilized in June 1948 and went to Cambridge in the following September where he took a degree in Agriculture . Robin was called up to join the Somerset Light Infantry with the "Z" reservists in 1952 but was by that time in Kenya.
