Cape of Good Hope
A career naval officer, he served aboard the flagship of his kinsman, Admiral Sir Hugh Cloberry Christian, K.B. In 1796-7, when Sir Hugh was Commander-in-Chief at the Cape of Good Hope, Ewan was sent out to deliver to him the Patent of Peerage just conferred upon him. On the way out, his ship fell into the hands of the French, and Ewan and all aboard were conveyed to France, where he was kept in prison for nine months, after which he was exchanged for Lieutenant Henri de Rochfort. The privations and hard treatment of this internment, however, so told upon his health that he had to leave the Service. He then settled at the Cape, where he prospered.
