In 1859 he was in the Cacciatori delle Alpi with Garibaldi; in 1860 with the help of Ricasoli he armed and took 800 Tuscans to Sicily in the 2nd expedition. He was promoted captain at Palermo, was wounded at Milazzo and at Messina was wounded in the head and received a silver medal for valour. He finished the Sicilian campaign as a Major commanding the 77th Infantry Regiment in Cosenz's division. In 1864 he became a professor in Florence; in 1865 professor of anatomy in Palermo. In 1866 he commanded the Guardia Nazionale in Palermo at the time of the insurrection of Sicily. He was made honorary citizen of Palermo for his work during the cholera epidemic. In October 1870 he founded the Institute of Anatomy and Physiology of the University of Rome. He wrote on malaria in the Pontine Marshes and on Sicily in 1966 and 1871. In 1874 he was elected deputy for Cortona and was twice re-elected. On 10th November 1892 he was made a senator.
